DEMO REEL REVIEW

The 3d reels with the acting feel too unfinished and are boring. Finished 3d clips from completed projects are more interesting to look at and are more original than tests with sampled material. It's also repetitive because so many 3d reels consist of that. The bland colors also make those reels boring to watch as well, and the models feel unfinished. However, the character design and rigging reels are cool because they are well executed and feel complete. It's also interesting how those reels show close ups of intricate details such as textures etc. The reels with majority of lip syncing and acting feel too academic.

So far Headless Productions has the best demo reel because there was more of a variety of work, and they were unified by the overall style which gave the reel an identity. We see different clips from the same animations throughout, but they are edited in a way that appear as though there is more work than there really is which is a brilliant strategy. The clips are just from different parts the same pieces. The title cards in most of the reels feel as though they are just tacked on instead of integrated into the reel. For example: black screen & title card w/silence, then reels plays. The title cards should feel like they are part of the reels. The viewers should be carried in and out of the reels. At the end of the day, the demo reels is a stand alone piece as well.

DOPE ANIMATION

Critique Review 9_5_11

I was critiqued by Professor Root. The critique was helpful. I was reminded ahead of time of specific details to be aware of before getting further into the project. Some of the suggestions included not adding too much detail in a single frame, figuring out the size I will draw my images so they fit the proper frame ratio when imported into toonboom (to avoid distorting the sizes to make them fit the screen). She also suggested I order chromacolor 12 field guide paper, and start figuring out what style and methodology I will use to complete the animation. We agreed that I animate a short clip of how the finished piece will look so she can provide further insight. In 2 weeks we will meet again to review the tests.

NEXT TASKS:

complete final character designs for bystanders
test animation clip in two weeks (to fig. out what style of animation will look like)
figure out what environment of Ecafay's imagination will look like (fight scene)

figure out specific methodology to work efficiently (troubleshooting)

BFA PITCH

Elevator Line:

With the shutdown of the last arcade in the city, Ecafay seeks refuge inside his imagination.

Theme:

Escapism/Arcades/Video Games from the mid to late 90s/Nostalgia

Central Point/Objective:

Artist - Homage to "Fun Arcade"
Show appreciation for arcades, and underrated video games

Main Character - Relive going to arcade and prevent it from being closed down/destroyed.

Conflict:

Ecafay cannot fully control his imagination.
Bougie Mart mascot attacks him and the arcade in his dream.

Central Goal:

Escape from Bougie Mart monster.

Movie About In Abstract Terms:
Escapism In Ecafay's dream is his way of releasing his frustration towards bougie mart. Bougie Mart is personified as an hyper realised form of the company's logo. In Ecafay's dream, it is his chance to prevent "Arcade Cheeuh!!!" from being closed down.

Where does it take place:

Environment is based off New Orleans, but is not specific to any location in reality.

Structure Breakdown:

Scene 1

Time (day near noon)
Location - Neighborhood with shotgun houses. (identified with the south/New Orleans/Louisiana)

Main character is introduced/show how fascinated he is over video games and Arcade Cheeuh/introduce problem

Scene 2

Time (twilight/sunset)

Location - Ecafay's house/his room/bathroom

Room: Loathing over Arcade being closed down, and is constantly reminded of Bougie Mart by TV advertisements, bougie mart brand products in his home etc. This makes him so frustrated, he becomes sick to his stomach and has to take a dook.

Bathroom/Transition into dream:

Ecafay falls asleep on toilet. This will be revealed at the end. Viewer will not see Ecafay fall asleep prior to dream.

While taking his dook he gets in a comfortable reflective posture. Then cut to shot of Ecafay outside bombing/doing throw ups (doing graffiti). When Ecafay is shown doing the graffiti, he is in his dream. While bombing, he notices a mysterious alley. Ecafay walks through the alley. (Alley will be filled with junk that makes references to late 90s arcade video games). At the end of it, an open landscape with arcades is revealed to him.

Scene 3 Reveal of Open landscape arcade. Fights Bougie Mart monster. Ecafay defeats Bougie Mart monser, but plunges to his death.

How: Ecafay gets eaten by the monster when it attacks the arcade. The Bougie Monster's insides are mechanical. (Booby traps inside of him etc.) It is a living mobile fortress. After it eats him it takes off into the air. When Ecafay breaks out of it he is hundreds of feet in the air.

After cut of Ecafay falling, there will be a reveal of Ecafay on toilet waking up from dream. His bathroom will be messy indicating that he's been sleep walking. The final cut will be of his house and it will be sunrise.

Short Synopsis:

Ecafay is on the way to the last arcade in the city "Arcade Cheeuh!!!". When he arrives he finds out that it has been closed down to build a grocery store "Bougie Mart". (type of store is tentative). As a result of his frustration, Ecafay dreams "Arcade Cheah!!!" is still open, but is suddenly attacked by "Bougie Mart's" mascot. Ecafay must save himself and avenge "Arcade Cheeuh!!!".

Tone and Execution:

2d animation. light hearted. action
